Introduction to Interactive Figures

Figures 1 thru 5 (as referenced in the Energy-Mass Flow Model) visualize the complexity of energy and material streams in a sustainable community. The community includes multi-family residences, businesses, industries, and an infrastructure typical for a population of 100,000 people. The community and surrounding farm and forestland is self-sustained in terms of basic food supply and energy production, but it interacts with other communities and the environment in its mass and energy flows. Products and services are exchanged/exported and raw and processed materials, manufactured goods, and fuels are imported from other communities.
